Descripción
El Salto El Castaño está escondido en la selva detrás de Playa El Valle, y la única forma de llegar es a pie: una hora de caminata, entre ida y vuelta, por un sendero entre los árboles. El agua al pie de la cascada es tibia, algo que no suele esperarse de una cascada, y se puede nadar en ella. Andrés lleva una merienda para comer en la cascada. Luego se regresa por el mismo sendero hasta Playa El Valle para almorzar en un restaurante típico con vista directa al mar. Playa El Valle vale la pena por sí misma: arena fina, agua clara, montañas y acantilados que la rodean de ambos lados. Es una de las playas más tranquilas de la península. La corriente puede ser fuerte aquí, especialmente en invierno, así que pregúntale a Andrés dónde es seguro nadar antes de entrar al agua. El recorrido va de 9:30 am a 3:30 pm desde Playa El Valle. Hay una alternativa más larga para quienes disfrutan caminar: comenzando a las 8:00 am desde Loma Atravesada, unas dos horas a pie bajando por fincas y colinas hasta Playa El Valle, con el mismo almuerzo y un taxi de regreso. Playa El Valle, Samaná, at 9:30 am, back by 3:30 pm. If you take the longer Loma Atravesada route instead, it starts there at 8:00 am and ends at Playa El Valle with a taxi back. Agree the route and the spot with Andrés on WhatsApp beforehand.

About an hour of walking in total, there and back, on a jungle trail with uneven ground and roots. Closed shoes are needed; most people with normal fitness manage it, children included. The pool at the falls is shallow at the edge and deeper in the middle. At Playa El Valle the current can be strong, especially in winter — ask Andrés where it is safe to swim. No toilets or shops on the trail; the restaurant at the beach has both.

He even helped us to arrange transport to and from Samana at a good price after we realised going by bus would not work. Andrés knows all about the beaches, advised us on where was best to swim and where was not safe, told us a lot about the plants and trees. He even cracked open an almond to show us - it was tasty! The lunch was good and we had time to go to where the river meets the sea which was beautiful and refreshing to cool off before heading back. Highly recommend!
