Transport in Samaná: common questions
- How much is a taxi in Las Terrenas?
- A taxi within Las Terrenas costs about US$5–10, and a motoconcho (motorbike taxi) US$1–2 for a hop across town. Longer runs are priced by route rather than by meter — Playa Bonita is around US$10–15 and Playa Cosón US$15–20 each way. Agree the fare before you get in, and agree a pick-up time if you are heading somewhere with no taxi rank.
- How do I get a motoconcho in Las Terrenas?
- Wave one down — make eye contact and point where you are going — or take one from a stand along the main road. Fares are not metered, so agree the price before you get on, and expect to pay a little more after 10pm. If you would rather not negotiate at the roadside, or you do not speak Spanish, the GoConcho app books one in Las Terrenas from your browser: you set your pickup point and destination, see the fare before you confirm, and a verified local driver comes to you. Book a motoconcho on GoConcho.
- How much is a transfer from El Catey airport (AZS) to Las Terrenas?
- About US$75–80 for the vehicle, not per person, for a drive of roughly 45 minutes. El Catey is the closest airport to Las Terrenas. Transfers from Santo Domingo (SDQ) or Punta Cana (PUJ) cost considerably more because of the distance. Airport transfers are worth arranging before you land.
- Can I rent a car, scooter or quad in Las Terrenas?
- Yes. A scooter runs about US$25–35 a day, a quad slightly more, and a car or 4x4 roughly US$55–90 a day. Most local agencies want a passport and a credit card for the deposit. A 4x4 is worth it if you plan to reach Playa Cosón or the dirt road to Playa Rincón, especially after rain.
- How do I get from Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas?
- It is a 2 to 2.5 hour drive on the Boulevard del Atlántico toll road. A shared shuttle is about US$35–50 per person and a private car US$120–150. The cheapest way is a long-distance bus as far as Sánchez, from around RD$400, and a guagua or taxi over the hill from there. Our full Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas guide compares the timetables, pick-up points and fares.
- Do I need to book transport in advance in Samaná?
- For airport transfers, yes — arrange the driver before you fly, because taxi supply at El Catey thins out once a flight has cleared. For getting around town, no: taxis and motoconchos are easy to find in Las Terrenas and Samaná town. Las Galeras is smaller, so book ahead there for an early start.
