Las Galeras, Samaná, Dominican Republic
Playa Rincón is a 3 km arc of pale sand on the eastern tip of the Samaná peninsula, framed by the green cliffs of Cape Cabrón and backed by a dense palm grove. There are no hotels on the sand. A river runs into the sea at one end. By most rankings, it sits comfortably in the world's top 10.
The catch is access. The dirt track in from Las Galeras is rough and sometimes muddy, so most visitors come by boat from Las Galeras village or by 4x4 transfer. This guide covers both options, the best months to visit, where to eat on the beach, and how to combine Rincón with the rest of the Samaná peninsula.

**By boat from Las Galeras** (the popular option). Local fishermen run shuttle boats from the main beach in Las Galeras village. The crossing is 15–20 minutes; round-trips are USD $20–$30 per person and you can agree a pick-up time.
**By 4x4 from Las Galeras** (about 30 minutes). The dirt track passes through fincas and small streams. Manageable in a regular car in the dry season — uncomfortable to impassable after heavy rain. A pre-booked 4x4 transfer or guided 4x4 excursion is the easiest way.
**Full-day catamaran from Las Terrenas or Samaná town.** Several operators run catamaran day trips combining Rincón with snorkel stops along the cliffs.
Along the western section of the beach a handful of beach shacks serve fresh fish, lobster, plantains and rice for around USD $15–$25 per person — cash in pesos is best.
The swim is generally calm and shallow, with two main currents to watch for: one near the cliffs at the far end and one where the river meets the sea. The river end is a beautiful spot — you can float in the freshwater and walk a few minutes upstream into the jungle.
**Best months:** December to April (dry, breezy, less likely to have a muddy track).
**Avoid:** the day after heavy rain (track and river both flood briefly).
**Quietest:** weekday mornings. Sunday is the local family day and the most popular shacks fill up.
Bring cash, sunscreen, snorkel gear if you have it, and a hat — the few palms offer shade in the morning but the sun is direct in the afternoon.
Playa Rincón is on the eastern tip of the Samaná peninsula, near the village of Las Galeras, on the north-east coast of the Dominican Republic. It is about a 20-minute boat ride or 30-minute 4x4 drive from Las Galeras village.
The two easiest options are a local shuttle boat from Las Galeras beach (15–20 minutes each way, around USD $25 round trip) or a 4x4 transfer along the dirt access road (~30 minutes). Full-day catamaran trips from Las Terrenas and Samaná town also visit.
Yes — Playa Rincón has appeared near the top of "world's best beach" lists from Condé Nast Traveler, the Travel Channel and others, mostly because of the combination of length (3 km), palm backdrop, turquoise water and almost no development.
There are no hotels on the beach. A handful of simple seafood shacks operate along the western section, serving grilled fish, lobster, rice and plantains for about USD $15–$25. Bring cash (Dominican pesos preferred).
Generally yes — the water is shallow and calm along most of the beach. Be aware of two currents: one along the cliff at the far end of the beach, and one where the freshwater river meets the sea. Stay between the headlands and you will be fine.
