Horseback Riding on the Beach in Las Terrenas: Tours & Prices 2026.

Horseback riding in Las Terrenas is one of the most exhilarating ways to experience the Samaná Peninsula — cantering along a stretch of empty Caribbean beach with coconut palms blurring past and warm Atlantic waves lapping at your horse's hooves. Whether you're a first-time rider or an experienced equestrian, the beach rides here are genuinely unlike anything else in the Dominican Republic.

The first time I rode along Playa Cosón at sunrise, the beach was completely empty except for a few pelicans diving offshore. My guide, a local man who'd been working with horses in the area for over a decade, pointed out a narrow path into the jungle that most tourists never find. That kind of moment — equal parts adventure and intimacy with the landscape — is exactly what makes a beach horse ride in Samaná so memorable.

This guide covers everything you need to know for 2026: which routes to choose, what tours cost, how to book, and the insider details that make the difference between a good ride and an unforgettable one.

Horseback Riding in Las Terrenas: The Best Routes

Las Terrenas sits on the north coast of the Samaná Peninsula, flanked by two of the Dominican Republic's most beautiful undeveloped beaches. This geography makes it the ideal base for beach horse rides that feel genuinely wild — not staged or touristy.

Playa Cosón & Playa Bonita

These two beaches form a near-continuous 8-kilometer arc of pale sand west of Las Terrenas town. Most horseback tours depart from the western end of Las Terrenas and ride out toward Punta Bonita, where the jungle meets the sea.

The sand here is firm enough for a comfortable trot, and the water is shallow for long stretches — perfect for those magical moments when your horse splashes through the surf. On weekday mornings, you'll often have the entire beach to yourself.

Countryside & Jungle Trails

Some operators combine a beach section with a ride through the hills behind Las Terrenas, passing through small farming communities, cacao plantations, and secondary jungle. These combo beach-and-countryside rides typically last 2–3 hours and give you a much richer sense of rural Dominican life than a pure beach gallop.

I once passed a colmado (a small local corner store) mid-ride where the guide stopped to buy us fresh coconuts. The owner handed them up to us on horseback without missing a beat — that kind of casual, unhurried local interaction is something you simply can't manufacture.

Riding to Playa Rincón from Las Galeras

If you're willing to travel to the eastern tip of the peninsula, the horseback riding tour to Playa Rincón from Las Galeras is arguably the most dramatic ride on the entire peninsula. The trail winds through dense tropical forest before emerging onto the 500-meter crescent of near-deserted white sand. It's longer and more physically demanding, but absolutely worth it.

What Does a Beach Horse Ride in Samaná Cost?

Prices in 2026 vary by route length, group size, and whether the tour is private or shared. Here's a practical breakdown:

Most prices include a guide, helmet, and basic safety briefing. Tips for guides are customary and appreciated — RD$300–500 (~$5–9 USD) per person is standard for a good experience.

When Is the Best Time to Go Horseback Riding in Las Terrenas?

The Samaná Peninsula has two distinct seasons, and both have their appeal for equestrian adventures.

December through March is peak season — dry, sunny, and breezy. The beaches are at their most photogenic, the trails are firm, and the light is gorgeous. That said, this is also the busiest period, and popular tours fill up fast. Book at least 3–5 days ahead.

April through June brings the shoulder season — fewer tourists, greener jungle, and operators who are often willing to negotiate slightly on private rides. The occasional afternoon shower cools everything down without ruining a morning ride.

July through November is the wetter season. Trails can get muddy after heavy rain, and some operators reduce their schedule. However, the landscape is lush and extraordinarily green, and you'll often have the beach entirely to yourself. If you're visiting during this period, check conditions with your operator the day before.

Is Horseback Riding in Las Terrenas Safe for Beginners?

Absolutely — and this is one of the most common questions I hear from travelers who are curious but nervous. The horses used by reputable Las Terrenas operators are well-accustomed to beach terrain and beginner riders. They're typically calm, responsive, and used to the sound of waves and passing motoconchos (motorcycle taxis).

That said, a few safety points are worth knowing:

• Always wear the provided helmet, even if your guide doesn't wear one themselves
• Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended — sandals and flip-flops are a genuine hazard around hooves
• Children under 6 are generally not permitted on independent rides, though some operators offer led walks for young children with a parent present
• Pregnant travelers should consult their doctor before booking and inform the operator at the time of booking

Reputable operators will conduct a brief safety briefing before departure and match horse temperament to rider experience. If an operator skips the briefing entirely or doesn't ask about your experience level, that's a red flag.

How to Book a Horseback Riding Tour in Las Terrenas

There are a few ways to arrange a beach horse ride in Samaná in 2026:

Book Online Through Exploras

The easiest and most reliable option. Exploras works with vetted local operators, so you know the horses are well-cared-for and the guides are experienced. You can compare horseback riding tours in Las Terrenas and message the operator on WhatsApp to confirm availability and the meeting point.

Book at Your Hotel or Guesthouse

Many hotels in Las Terrenas can arrange horseback tours through local partners. This is convenient, but commissions mean you may pay 10–20% more than booking directly. It's worth comparing prices.

Arrange Directly at the Stables

If you prefer to meet the horses and guides before committing, some operators have stables or meeting points near the western end of Las Terrenas, close to the Playa Bonita access road. Walk-in bookings are possible in low season, but in peak season (especially January–March during whale season) you risk missing out.

Insider tip: Some of the best-value rides aren't advertised online at all — they're offered by local families who keep a small number of horses and take out groups of 2–4 riders. Ask at a local colmado near Playa Cosón or Playa Bonita. You'll pay less, the experience is more personal, and your money goes directly to the community. That said, vet the horses' condition carefully before agreeing.

Combining Horseback Riding with Other Las Terrenas Adventures

A beach horse ride pairs beautifully with other activities on the Samaná Peninsula, and many travelers build a full day around it.

In the morning: Ride at sunrise along Playa Cosón (1.5–2 hours) Late morning: Cool off with a swim at Playa Bonita — the water here is a particular shade of deep turquoise that photographs almost unbelievably well Afternoon: Join a catamaran tour in Samaná Bay or head inland for an ATV adventure through the hills — check out our guide to ATV and buggy tours in Samaná 2026 for route ideas

For couples, a sunset horse ride followed by dinner at a beachfront restaurant in Las Terrenas is genuinely one of the most romantic evenings the peninsula offers. If you're planning a romantic trip, our couples travel guide to Samaná has more ideas tailored to two.

If you're visiting with children, horseback riding is one of the most popular family-friendly activities in Samaná — kids who are old enough to ride independently almost universally love it.

What to Wear and Bring on Your Ride

Packing the right things makes a significant difference to your comfort. Here's what I always recommend:

Wear:

• Lightweight long trousers, leggings, or riding pants
• Closed-toe shoes or light hiking shoes (NOT flip-flops)
• A breathable, light-colored long-sleeve shirt for sun protection
• Sunglasses with a strap so they don't fly off at a trot

Bring:

• High-SPF sunscreen (applied before departure)
• A small amount of cash in Dominican pesos for tips and any drinks along the way
• A waterproof phone case or dry bag
• A reusable water bottle — most guides carry water, but having your own is wise in the heat

Leave behind:

• Large backpacks or bags (they shift awkwardly and can spook horses)
• Expensive jewelry
• Anything you'd be devastated to lose to a wave or a muddy trail

Responsible Equestrian Tourism: What to Look For

Not all horse tours are created equal, and animal welfare standards vary across the Dominican Republic. In 2026, responsible tourism matters more than ever — here's what to look for when choosing an operator:

• Horses should be a healthy weight with no visible sores, wounds, or signs of distress
• Saddles and tack should fit properly — ill-fitting equipment causes pain and behavioral issues
• Ride duration should be reasonable — any operator offering 5+ hour rides in midday heat should be approached with caution
• Guides should demonstrate genuine care for the animals, not just treat them as props
• Water should be available for horses at rest stops on longer rides

Exploras only lists operators who meet our baseline standards for animal welfare and guest safety. When in doubt, learn how booking works on Exploras — we vet every experience before it goes live.

There's a particular kind of freedom that comes from galloping along a deserted Caribbean beach on horseback — the kind that's hard to explain until you've felt the salt spray and heard the thunder of hooves on wet sand. In Las Terrenas in 2026, that experience is still remarkably accessible, affordable, and genuinely wild.
