Description
Cayo Levantado is the small island sitting in the middle of Samana Bay, known to everyone here as Bacardi after the rum advert that was filmed on it. DDD runs the crossing from the main dock in Samana town, and the ride over takes in the whole sweep of the bay.
The island is a white sand beach with clear shallow water, good for swimming and for snorkelling close to shore. There are loungers to sit on and a seafood lunch is served on the island, so the day is built around eating, swimming and doing very little.
It is an easy trip that suits families and anyone who wants a beach day without a long drive. The boat leaves the dock at 9:30 in the morning and is back between 3:45 and 4:00 in the afternoon. If you would rather not share the boat, DDD also runs a small private boat to the island for up to four people at a flat US$150.

Avenida La Marina #9, main dock of Samana, Samana 32000, Dominican Republic
DDD Samana Boat Tours works out of the main dock in the town of Samana, on Avenida La Marina, and covers the whole bay from there. Between 15 January and 31 March they run whale watching on a 40-foot motor catamaran, going out to the humpback whales that come into Samana Bay every year to mate and raise their calves. The rest of the year the same boats head for Los Haitises National Park, with its limestone islets, mangrove channels and Taino caves, and for Cayo Levantado, the small island in the bay that everyone calls Bacardi, where the day is built around lunch, swimming and the beach. They also charter for sport fishing with Captain Jonathan, after dorado, barracuda and wahoo inside the bay and tuna and marlin further out. The fleet runs from a small open boat for four people up to a 40-foot catamaran for twelve, by the half day or the full day. Lisette Jimenez handles the bookings.
