Description
Every year between January 15 and March 31 humpback whales come into the bay of Samana to mate and raise their calves, and DDD takes visitors out to see them on a 40-foot motor catamaran that leaves from the main dock in the town of Samana. The boat carries up to 50 people and is open on all sides, so there is room to move around and watch from either rail.
The trip runs three hours, or seven if you add the island of Cayo Levantado, also known as Bacardi, for an extra US$10 per person. That add-on includes lunch with chicken, fish, salad, water and a soft drink, plus time to swim, snorkel and sit on the beach before heading back.
Children between six and nine pay a reduced fare and infants under six travel free. You can book by WhatsApp or online, and a cancellation made at least 24 hours ahead is refunded in full, as is any trip DDD cancels for weather. Whales are wild animals and sightings are never promised, but Samana Bay is one of the most reliable places in the Caribbean to see them.

DDD Samana Boat Tours works out of the main dock in the town of Samana, on Avenida La Marina, and covers the whole bay from there. Between 15 January and 31 March they run whale watching on a 40-foot motor catamaran, going out to the humpback whales that come into Samana Bay every year to mate and raise their calves. The rest of the year the same boats head for Los Haitises National Park, with its limestone islets, mangrove channels and Taino caves, and for Cayo Levantado, the small island in the bay that everyone calls Bacardi, where the day is built around lunch, swimming and the beach. They also charter for sport fishing with Captain Jonathan, after dorado, barracuda and wahoo inside the bay and tuna and marlin further out. The fleet runs from a small open boat for four people up to a 40-foot catamaran for twelve, by the half day or the full day. Lisette Jimenez handles the bookings.
