A beautiful family-run business with a very down-to-earth couple who are highly knowledgeable about their cacao. They will show you their garden cacao trees, some more than 50 years old, as well as the kitchen and utensils they use to prepare and grind the cacao. They explain the whole process clearly and patiently answer questions. You can also taste their cacao, and if you ask nicely, they may prepare hot chocolate with local herbs :b At the end, you can buy some of their products. We did the tour in Spanish, but I think their daughter or son speak English. If you want the tour in English perhaps text them before (see the phone number in the photo with their products).

What a gem! Don’t miss this place. The owners are incredible, and it’s a wonderful community experience. You can learn everything about cacao: the harvesting process and how to make cacao paste and cacao nibs. You can also enjoy a freshly prepared cacao drink, and buy locally produced coffee and coconut oil. Thank you for hosting us so warmly and for sharing your knowledge.

Amazing cacao tour and tasting. Lovely family, they picked us fresh coconuts, tried the cacao fruit, and had amazing cacao tea and learned about the chocolate process

Description

Sandra and her family make artisan cacao at their home in El Café, in the hills of El Limón. A visit takes you through their garden of cacao trees, some more than fifty years old, and into the kitchen where they roast and grind the beans by hand with traditional utensils. They explain the whole process from pod to paste and nibs, let you taste the fresh cacao fruit, and serve a cup of cacao tea, often with a fresh coconut. Their own cacao, coffee, coconut oil and honey are for sale at the end. It is a small, family experience rather than a factory tour, and it combines well with a trip to the El Limón waterfall.
