Loma Pilón de Azúcar — Sugarloaf Hill — is one of the highest points in the Sierra de Samaná: 530 metres above sea level, rising 474 metres above the land around it. It stands inland from Rincón, next to Loma Atravesada, and almost nobody walks it. There is a local story that the hill is a volcano. Andrés will tell you about it and also tell you that no study has ever shown one. Eleven kilometres there and back, starting at 8:30 am from Rincón in Las Galeras. The route climbs through working farmland — plantain, yautía, yuca — and you pass people at work in it, which is most of what makes the walk what it is. At the top, the whole peninsula. The day finishes the right way: down to Playa Rincón and the cold freshwater of Caño Frío for a swim, back by 4:00 pm. This one is for people who actually want a mountain. Lunch and a drink are included, but bring more water than you think you need — there is nowhere to buy any on the way up. Andrés Pérez has guided this coast for fifteen years, is certified by the Ministry of Tourism and belongs to AGTUGE, the local guides' association.

Meeting Point
Rincón, in the Las Galeras district of Samaná. The walk starts at 8:30 am and finishes at Playa Rincón around 4:00 pm. Agree the exact spot with Andrés on WhatsApp the day before.
Accessibility & Requirements
Eleven kilometres round trip with a climb of roughly 470 metres, on farm tracks and footpaths, in full sun for long stretches. This is the hardest walk in Andrés's catalogue and it asks for real fitness and closed shoes. Not suitable for young children, for anyone with knee or heart trouble, or for limited mobility. There is nowhere to buy water or food on the route, and no shelter and no toilets until the beach at the end.

Isabel D'Ma year agoMy friend and I booked the 7 beaches walking tour ans had a great day with Andrés - he is from the area and knows everyone! He even helped us to arrange transport to and from Samana at a good price after we realised going by bus would not work. Andrés knows all about the beaches, advised us on where was best to swim and where was not safe, told us a lot about the plants and trees. He even cracked open an almond to show us - it was tasty! The lunch was good and we had time to go to where the river meets the sea which was beautiful and refreshing to cool off before heading back. Highly recommend! The beach itself is stunning—secluded, pristine, and surrounded by lush nature that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden paradise. Andre is an excellent guide.
