Highlights

  • Ride the horses into the water, not just up to it
  • Half day, or full day with a picnic
  • About three to three and a half hours
  • Horses matched to your real riding level
  • Round-trip hotel transfer on request

Description

A half day that ends with the horses in the water. You ride out from the hacienda at La Barbacoa, down to the swimming spot, and go in with them — not watching from the bank, but on them, in the water. About three to three and a half hours, $85 per person. There is also a full-day version at $110 per person, or $135 with a picnic on the way. Riding a horse in water is not the same as riding one on land: it asks for a rider who can stay balanced and let the horse work. Horses are matched to what each rider can do, and the hacienda works mainly with people who have ridden before — tell them honestly what you can do when you book. The weight limit is 90 kg.

Accessibility & Requirements

Maximum rider weight is 90 kg. You should be comfortable in water and able to stay balanced on a horse that is swimming. The hacienda works mainly with people who have ridden before; tell them your real level when you book, and ask them where the swim takes place and what the conditions are on your date. There is little or no phone signal at the stables, so replies to messages can take a while.

A working equestrian center at La Barbacoa, in the hills above Las Terrenas, with rides out to the countryside, the forest and the beach. The hacienda works mainly with riders who have been on a horse before: horses are matched to what each rider can actually do, and the pace can open up to a canter or a gallop. There is a shorter walking ride for first-timers, and private lessons from eight years old. The team answers in French, Spanish and English.

Amazing horse riding! The horses were so nice, just pull a little bit and they do what u want. Nice french girl instructors. Ride trough a jurrasic park forrest, swim trough a river, canter on the beach or in the jungle. Perfect.

Very enjoyable & eventful afternoon ride through the forest, which offers some scenic views when you rise above the canopy. My very well trained horse was able to handle my limited skill (and similarly my guide handle my limited french). Hotel pick up and return service was also convenient.

Just got back from a trip to the Dominican Republic, and my highlight was certainly the 3 hour horseriding trek through the forest with Hacienda la Suerte. Horses are very well taken care of, are lovely to ride and the people working there (Valérie and Lou were our guides) were fantastic. The scenery is stunning as well, and if you're an experienced rider looking to canter and gallop there will be plenty of that! I had so much fun and can't recommend this place enough.
