3-Day Samaná Itinerary: The Perfect Weekend Getaway.

A 3-day Samaná itinerary lets you experience the peninsula's three distinct personalities: the French-Caribbean fusion of Las Terrenas, the raw jungle beauty of El Limón and Los Haitises, and the turquoise isolation of Las Galeras. In 72 hours, you can watch humpback whales breach offshore, swim beneath a 52-meter waterfall, and eat fresh kingfish on a beach that doesn't appear on most maps.

Three days isn't long. But Samaná is compact enough — about 50 kilometers coast to coast — that a well-planned weekend here hits harder than a week somewhere else. I've done this trip more times than I can count, and every version surprises me. The peninsula has a way of doing that.

Before you dive in, check our guide to things to do in Samaná for a full overview of experiences across the peninsula — it's the best companion to this itinerary.

Day 1 of Your Samaná Itinerary: Las Terrenas & the North Coast

Arrive in Las Terrenas — by Caribe Tours bus to Sánchez plus a guagua (shared minibus) over the hill, or by car on the Samaná highway. The drive from Santo Domingo takes about 2.5 hours (every option is in our Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas guide), and the moment you crest the mountains above Las Terrenas and see the Caribbean stretching out below, you'll understand why people cancel their return flights.

Morning: Playa Bonita and a Proper Dominican Breakfast

Drop your bags and walk west along the coast to Playa Bonita. It's about 2 kilometers from the Las Terrenas town center, reachable on foot or by motoconcho (motorcycle taxi) for RD$100–150 (~$1.70–2.50 USD). The beach curves gently, backed by coconut palms, and on weekday mornings you'll often have long stretches entirely to yourself.

For breakfast, find a colmado (corner store) near the beach and grab fresh pan de agua (Dominican water bread) with salami and a cold Presidente. It costs almost nothing and tastes like the island itself.

Afternoon: Playa Cosón or Kitesurfing at El Portillo

Afternoon light on the north coast is extraordinary — the water shifts from deep blue to a shallow, almost impossible green near the shore. Head east toward Playa Cosón, a 5-kilometer stretch of near-empty beach that's one of the longest undeveloped coastlines in the Dominican Republic.

If you're an adrenaline seeker, the flats near El Portillo are among the best kitesurfing spots on the peninsula. Winds are consistent from November through April. Our kitesurfing Las Terrenas guide covers everything you need to know about schools, equipment rental, and conditions.

Evening: Las Terrenas Town

As the sun drops, head back into town. Las Terrenas has a genuinely cosmopolitan food scene — French, Italian, Lebanese, and Dominican kitchens all within a few blocks of each other. Wander the streets near the main square and let your nose guide you.

Day 2: El Limón Waterfall and Cayo Levantado

This is the day most people remember longest. Wake up early — the road to El Limón is best before the midday heat, and Cayo Levantado gets crowded by noon.

Morning: El Limón Waterfall by Horseback

The village of El Limón sits about 25 kilometers west of Las Terrenas, roughly 45 minutes by car or guagua. From the village, the classic way to reach the waterfall is on horseback — a 45-minute ride through cacao groves and banana plantations that smells like actual chocolate in the rainy season.

Horseback tours cost approximately RD$1,500–2,000 (~$25–35 USD) per person, including a guide. You can also hike in about 40 minutes if you prefer. Either way, nothing prepares you for the moment the trail opens up and you see the 52-meter cascade dropping into a jade-green pool.

You can swim in the pool at the base. The water is cold, clear, and fed directly from the mountains above. I've been there a dozen times and I still stand at the edge for a moment before jumping in.

Book your El Limón waterfall tour through Exploras to lock in a guide who speaks English and knows the trail's hidden viewpoints.

Afternoon: Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island)

After El Limón, drive or take a guagua east to Samaná town (about 35 kilometers, roughly 1 hour). From the dock, lanchas (small motorboats) ferry visitors to Cayo Levantado — the island made famous by a Bacardi rum ad in the 1970s.

Ferry tickets cost RD$300–500 (~$5–9 USD) round trip from the public dock. The island has a public beach on one end and a resort on the other — stick to the public side, where local vendors sell fresh coconut water and grilled fish right on the sand.

The water around Cayo Levantado is a specific shade of turquoise I've never found anywhere else — shallow, warm, and so clear you can count the fish below your feet from the dock. Spend two hours here and you'll feel like you've been on vacation for a week.

Evening: Dinner in Samaná Town

Samaná town has a different energy than Las Terrenas — more Dominican, less international. The malecón (seafront promenade) is the place to be at sunset. Grab a table at one of the open-air restaurants facing the bay and order pescado al coco (fish in coconut sauce) — a local specialty that combines the peninsula's two most abundant ingredients perfectly.

If you're curious about the full range of local dishes, our traditional Dominican food guide for Samaná is essential reading before you sit down to order.

Day 3: Las Galeras and Playa Rincón

Save the best beach for last. Las Galeras, at the far eastern tip of the peninsula, is where Samaná gets truly wild.

Morning: The Drive to Las Galeras

From Samaná town, Las Galeras is 28 kilometers east — about 40 minutes on a road that winds through fishing villages and patches of tropical forest. The drive itself is worth it. You'll pass small communities where kids wave from roadside colmados and roosters own the intersections.

Las Galeras village is tiny, unhurried, and deeply charming. There's no mall, no resort strip, no chain restaurants. Just a few guesthouses, a dive shop, and a beach that curves into the distance.

Late Morning: Playa Rincón

This is the main event. Playa Rincón is consistently ranked among the top ten beaches in the Caribbean, and the first time I stood at the western end of that 3-kilometer arc of white sand, I genuinely didn't speak for about two minutes.

To get there from Las Galeras, you have two options:

• By boat: Hire a local fisherman from the Las Galeras dock for about RD$600–800 (~$10–14 USD) round trip per person. The 15-minute ride skirts dramatic cliffs and arrives at the beach from the sea — the best possible entrance.
• By 4WD: A rough track leads overland, but it requires a proper off-road vehicle. Most visitors take the boat.

The beach has no hotels, no Wi-Fi, and no noise beyond waves and wind. A few vendors sell cold drinks and grilled lobster from simple wooden stalls. Eat lunch here — fresh lobster with tostones costs around RD$1,200–1,800 (~$20–30 USD) and is one of the best meals you'll have in the Dominican Republic.

Read our full Playa Rincón beach guide before you go — it covers the best spots to swim, snorkel, and where to find shade in the afternoon.

Afternoon: Snorkeling or a Slow Goodbye

If you have energy left, the waters off Las Galeras are excellent for snorkeling. Visibility is often above 20 meters, and the coral formations near Playa Frontón (accessible only by boat) are some of the healthiest on the peninsula.

Otherwise, spend the afternoon exactly as Las Galeras intends: slowly. A hammock, a cold Presidente, and the particular quality of late-afternoon light on the bay.

Is 3 Days Enough Time for Samaná?

Honestly? Three days is enough to fall in love with Samaná — but not enough to see everything. The peninsula rewards repeat visits. On a 3-day Samaná trip, you'll need to make choices.

If it's January through March, prioritize whale watching above everything else. The humpback whale season in Samaná Bay is one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth — up to 3,000 whales gather here annually to breed and calve. A morning on the water watching 40-ton animals breach within meters of your boat is not something you forget. Book your whale watching in Samaná experience as early as possible; tours fill up weeks in advance during peak season.

If you're visiting outside whale season, the itinerary above covers the peninsula's essential experiences without feeling rushed. You'll sleep well every night.

According to the Dominican Republic's official tourism board, Samaná receives the highest concentration of repeat visitors of any region in the country — and after three days here, you'll understand exactly why.
