Ocean World is the big marine park of the Dominican Republic's north coast, and a staple of Puerto Plata holidays and cruise calls. It sits on the shore at Cofresí, just west of the city, with a marina and a casino alongside. The park sells everything from a simple day of pools, reef snorkelling and animal exhibits to close-up programmes with dolphins, sea lions, nurse sharks and capybaras.
What is Ocean World? It is a marine adventure park in Cofresí, Puerto Plata, built around a large dolphin lagoon, with sea lions, sharks, a reef aquarium, a bird habitat, pools and slides. Every ticket gives you the whole park for the day; the animal programmes are timed 20- to 25-minute sessions added on top. It opened in 2004 and is open every day of the year.
This guide sets out the published prices, what each ticket really includes, the age and height rules, and how a visit fits around a cruise call. It also covers, plainly, the debate about keeping dolphins in captivity.
Where is Ocean World, and how do you get there?
The park's address is Calle Principal #3, Cofresí, on the coast road west of Puerto Plata city. Cofresí is about 8 km from the city, roughly a 20-minute drive. Ocean World's own marina is part of the same complex and has room for 122 yachts.
Most programme tickets include round-trip transport from Puerto Plata hotels. Pickups from Sosúa and Cabarete cost extra; the airport (POP), Sosúa and Cabarete are all east of the city, so from there you cross Puerto Plata to reach the park. The park also lists private taxis, rental cars and tour transport as options. It publishes no taxi fares, so agree a price with the driver before you set off and confirm where they will collect you for the return.
If you are staying in the city or at Playa Dorada, Ocean World combines easily with the rest of a Puerto Plata stay; our guide to things to do in Puerto Plata covers the old town, the fortress and day trips along the coast.
What is there to do at Ocean World?
The park is laid out as a series of habitats and water areas. A general ticket covers:
- Dolphin Beach Lagoon, with beach chairs and umbrellas
- Snorkelling in the Tropical Reef Aquarium (minimum height 114 cm)
- Pirate's Pool, plus water slides and aquatic games (minimum height 122 cm)
- Tropical Forest & Bird Habitat
- Dolphin, sea lion and tropical bird exhibits, and shark-feeding observation
- Scheduled animal presentations; Diario Libre's August 2026 round-up mentions dolphin and bird shows
On top of that come the paid interactive programmes: two dolphin options plus a VIP version, a sea lion encounter, a shark encounter with snorkelling, and a capybara meet-and-greet. The official ticket list for October 2026 has no big-cat programme, so don't plan around one.
How much does Ocean World cost?
These are the park's published prices as of October 2026; check before you go. Prices are per person in US dollars, and every programme below includes full-day park access and lunch.
| Programme | Adult | Child | Animal time | Who can take part |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day Pass | US$79 | US$64 | none (exhibits only) | All ages; infants 0–5 free |
| Dolphin Encounter (shallow water) | US$129 | US$99 | 20 min | "All ages welcome"; infants 0–5 free |
| Dolphin Swim (deep water) | US$189 | US$144 | 20 min | 6+, 114 cm+, max 125 kg, must swim |
| VIP Dolphin Swim | US$240 | US$190 | 25 min + briefing | 6+, 114 cm+ |
| Sea Lion Encounter | US$110 | US$110 | 20 min | 6+, 114 cm+ |
| Shark Encounter & Snorkelling | US$110 | US$110 | 20 min | 6+, 114 cm+ |
| Capybara Encounter | US$99 | US$84 | 20 min | 6+, 114 cm+, max 136 kg |
The park's booking forms put children at ages 6 to 12, and its pages disagree on whether the free infant band ends at 3 or 5. Ask before you book if you have a four- or five-year-old.
Dominican residents get a separate, cheaper price list. Those tickets cannot be cancelled and need a Dominican ID card (cédula) at the gate.
What's included in the ticket, and what costs extra?
Every standard ticket covers park access from 9 am to 6 pm, a lunch buffet, reef snorkelling, the pools and slides, the lagoon beach and the exhibits.
Not included on the standard tickets:
- Drinks
- Photos and videos, which are sold on site; you cannot take your own phone or camera into an animal programme
- Lockers, which you rent on site
- Towels: bring your own, though the park may sell them
The VIP Dolphin Swim is the exception. It adds a welcome drink, one non-alcoholic drink with lunch, reserved seating, towel service and locker use, and the dolphin session runs five minutes longer.
The park is cashless: it takes credit and debit cards and, where available, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Bring a card even if your ticket is prepaid, because photos, drinks and lockers add up.
Who can swim with the dolphins?
For the Dolphin Swim the rules are firm: minimum age 6, minimum height 114 cm (45 in), maximum weight 125 kg (275 lb), and every participant must be able to swim. Life jackets are provided and compulsory. Each child under 11 needs a participating adult aged 18 or over. The deep-water swim includes feeding, a hug and a ride pushed along on a boogie board.
The Dolphin Encounter is the gentler option: one dolphin, in waist-deep water, aimed at non-swimmers and families with young children.
Some rules apply to every animal programme:
- Pregnant guests cannot take part.
- The park warns that some programmes involve ladders, wet surfaces and standing, and may not suit guests with back, neck or knee problems or limited mobility. Contact it before booking if this applies.
- No phones, cameras or GoPros during interactions, and no food or drink in the interaction areas.
When is Ocean World open, and how long do you need?
Ocean World is open every day, holidays included, from 9 am to 6 pm, and it runs rain or shine. Weather or sea conditions can still delay or reschedule individual sessions.
The animal session itself is short, 20 minutes for most programmes, but the park asks you to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for check-in, briefing and changing. Add lunch and some time in the lagoon and snorkel pool, and most visitors need a half day at minimum. Cruise-line versions give a guide: Norwegian estimates about 4.5 hours for its dolphin swim trip, and Carnival 5 hours, including transfers.
If you are planning the rest of the week, the north coast's two other classic day trips are the 27 Charcos de Damajagua waterfalls and a boat day to Cayo Arena (Paradise Island). Each takes most of a day, so put them on different days from Ocean World.
Can you visit Ocean World on a cruise day?
Yes. Cruise lines sell Ocean World as a shore excursion, and Ocean World says its programmes are sold by Carnival, Costa, Holland America, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, Regent, Oceania and MSC. Our guide to Puerto Plata's cruise ports explains how Amber Cove and Taíno Bay differ.
Two things matter on a ship day:
- Book through your cruise line. The cruise-line version includes round-trip transport from the port and is timed to get you back aboard. Ocean World warns that cruise passengers who book directly on its website may have the booking cancelled and refunded, minus up to 10% kept as a transaction fee.
- Cruise prices differ from the gate. Carnival lists its Dolphin Swim & Ocean World Day Pass from Amber Cove at US$173.99 for adults and US$149.99 for children, and Norwegian's Puerto Plata version starts at US$269.99 and US$199.99. Read each listing for what it includes. Norwegian, for example, says cash and ship cards are not accepted for extras at the park.
If you dock at Amber Cove and want to know what else is within reach, see our Amber Cove guide.
Is swimming with dolphins at Ocean World ethical?
Captive dolphin programmes divide opinion, and it is worth knowing the arguments before you buy.
The case against. World Animal Protection, an international welfare charity, urges travellers not to buy swim-with-dolphin tickets. It says captive dolphins live in spaces about 200,000 times smaller than their natural range and that demand for these programmes drives captures from the wild. It recommends watching dolphins in the wild instead. Travel companies have moved too: in October 2019 Tripadvisor said it would stop selling tickets on Tripadvisor and Viator to any commercial facility that breeds or imports whales, dolphins or porpoises for public display, with an exception for seaside sanctuaries.
The park's side. In April 2018 Ocean World received the American Humane Conservation "Humane Certified" seal after a third-party audit, and American Humane described it as the first institution in the Caribbean to earn it. The park's sustainability page lists animal well-being among its commitments.
If you feel uneasy about dolphin programmes, the Day Pass lets you see the park without booking an interaction, or you can choose wild marine life instead (see the last section).
Tips for a smoother day at Ocean World
- Book ahead online if you are not on a cruise. The park's ticket page lists its standard international tickets as cancellable, and booking lets you choose a programme start time in advance.
- Pick an early session. You get the interaction done before the midday heat and still have the afternoon for the pools.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen. The park recommends it, and you will be snorkelling in the reef aquarium.
- Pack a swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, water shoes or sandals, a hat and a card for extras.
- Leave jewellery behind for animal sessions. Cruise-line listings ask guests to remove rings, necklaces and earrings, and to shower beforehand.
- Decide on photos in advance. You cannot film your own session, and the park sells its photos only for a limited time after your visit.
- Bring ID if your ticket or a promotion requires it.
Where can you see wild marine life instead?
For snorkelling in open water, the calm, sheltered bay at Sosúa is the north coast's easy choice. Our Sosúa Beach guide covers where to swim and rent gear.
For the biggest wild-animal experience in the country, look to Samaná and its winter humpback whales. The environment ministry formally opened the 2026 viewing season in mid-January for Samaná Bay and the offshore Banco de la Plata sanctuary, issuing 46 whale-watching permits, three of them for trips from Puerto Plata. The season runs roughly January to March. It is a long drive from Puerto Plata, but if your trip falls in those months, our guide to things to do in Samaná explains how to plan it.
