Highlights
- Humpback whales breaching, tail-slapping and singing in Samaná Bay
Description
Between mid-January and late March, thousands of humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay to mate and calve, and this trip takes you out to meet them. You sail from the Samaná pier with a guide who reads the behaviour for you — a breach, a tail slap, the song of a male below the hull — and explains the rules that protect the animals: one boat per whale, a fixed approach distance, forty-five minutes and no more. The boat then crosses to Cayo Levantado, where there is time on the beach and lunch before the return. It is the same bay the humpbacks have used for centuries, and the season is short, so dates fill early.

Definitely use Peninsula tours to book your excursions in Samana! Henry was our tour guide and he was amazing! We did two different excursions. One excursion was to Salto el Limón and the other excursion was whale watching & Cayo Levantado. He made all excursions great. He took the time to thoroughly explain everything beforehand and was great guiding us throughout. He also took the time to make a birthday celebration extra special. I can’t wait to return and I would definitely recommend for everyone to try at least one of his tours!See this review on Google
We had an incredible experience visiting Los Haitises with Henry. From the start, his communication was excellent; he was incredibly responsive on WhatsApp and patiently answered all our questions before the trip. On the day of the tour, Henry was punctual for our pickup in Las Terrenas. We felt very safe with his conscious driving to Samaná, and his friendly conversation made the trip very enjoyable. The entire vibe of the day was wonderfully peaceful and well-organized. The highlight of our trip was Henry’s flexibility. While it wasn't a formal part of the tour, we happened to spot whales and dolphins along the way. Henry immediately stopped the boat so we could take our time and enjoy the beauty of these animals. It was a magical, unhurried moment that we will never forget. Throughout the park, Henry shared fascinating information regarding the history and geological formation of Los Haitises. He was incredibly mindful, ensuring we had everything we needed at all times. If you want a guide who is knowledgeable, safe, and truly cares about your experience, book with Henry!See this review on Google
What a lovely experience. We saw so many whales. It was quite an experience for me. After the whales we had lunch and spent a few hours of beach time at cayo levantado. Henry our guide made the experience even better. He was funny and knowledgeable and just made it and overall great experience.See this review on Google
