A limestone cliff rising straight out of the water in Los Haitises National Park, Samaná Bay

Los Haitises National Park by Boat.

Samaná Bay, Samaná, Dominican Republic

Los Haitises National Park sits on the south shore of Samaná Bay and can only be reached by boat. Full-day tours run from Samaná town, Las Terrenas and Las Galeras and cost roughly USD $65–$120 per person, lasting 6.5 to 9 hours. Almost every tour combines the park with Cayo Levantado. The boat crossing from Samaná town takes about an hour each way.

Los Haitises ("the highlands" in Taíno) is the strangest landscape in the Dominican Republic: hundreds of limestone hummocks rising straight out of the water, laced together by red-mangrove channels, with caves at the waterline that still carry Taíno pictographs drawn centuries before Columbus.

There is no road in. Every visit is a boat trip, which is why the park is sold as a full-day excursion rather than a place you drive to. Boats leave from Samaná town's pier, and operators in Las Terrenas and Las Galeras add a road transfer at the front of the day.

How to visit Los Haitises

From Samaná town: the shortest crossing and the widest choice of operators. The run across the bay takes roughly an hour each way, so the boat time alone is a good chunk of the day.

From Las Terrenas or Las Galeras: operators collect you by road, drive you to the departure pier and take it from there. Expect an early start — these are 8 to 9 hour days door to door.

Private charter: if you are four or more, chartering the whole boat is often close in price to buying individual seats, and you set the pace at the caves.

You cannot visit the park independently or on foot. A licensed boat and a park guide are part of every legitimate trip.

What you actually see

The mangrove channels. The boat cuts its engine and drifts through tunnels of red mangrove — the quietest part of the day and the best for birds.

The caves. Cueva de la Arena and Cueva de la Línea are the usual stops: low limestone chambers with Taíno pictographs and petroglyphs on the walls, reached by stepping straight off the boat.

Cayo de los Pájaros (Bird Island). A rock stacked with frigatebirds and brown pelicans; the frigates are at their most dramatic in breeding season, when the males inflate red throat pouches.

Cayo Levantado. Nearly every Los Haitises tour ends at the cay for lunch and a swim, which is why the two names appear together on almost every listing.

What it costs and how long it takes

Shared full-day tours on Exploras run from USD $65 to $120 per person, and last 6.5 to 9 hours depending on where you start. Lunch is included on most of them; the park entrance fee usually is too, but it is worth confirming when you message the operator.

Private boat charters start around USD $350 for the boat rather than per person.

Prices on this page are each operator's own starting price. Message them on WhatsApp to confirm what your group pays — Exploras does not take a booking or a commission.

When to go and what to bring

Time of year: the park is open year-round and the mangroves do not have a season. Between mid-January and late March, humpback whales are in Samaná Bay and several operators combine the two — that is the single best window for a boat day here.

Time of day: morning departures get the calmer water. Afternoon crossings can be choppy when the trade winds pick up.

Bring: a rain shell (it is a rainforest — brief showers are normal and you are in an open boat), reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag for your phone. The cave floors are wet and uneven, so closed shoes beat flip-flops.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Los Haitises National Park?

Only by boat. Tours leave from Samaná town pier, which is about an hour across the bay, and operators in Las Terrenas and Las Galeras add a road transfer to that pier at the start of the day. There is no road entrance and no way to walk in.

How much does a Los Haitises tour cost?

Shared full-day tours listed on Exploras run from about USD $65 to $120 per person, usually including lunch. Private boat charters start around USD $350 for the whole boat. Confirm the price for your group directly with the operator on WhatsApp.

How long is a Los Haitises tour?

Between 6.5 and 9 hours door to door. Tours from Samaná town are at the shorter end; tours from Las Terrenas or Las Galeras are longer because of the road transfer to the pier.

Is Los Haitises worth visiting?

Yes, if you want the landscape rather than a beach day. The mangrove channels, the karst islands and the Taíno cave art are unlike anywhere else in the country. Most tours pair it with a swim at Cayo Levantado, so you get both.

Can you visit Los Haitises from Punta Cana?

There are long day trips sold from Punta Cana, but they involve several hours of road travel each way. If you are staying on the Samaná peninsula you are already at the park's doorstep, and the same excursion is a much shorter day.

Can you see whales and Los Haitises on the same trip?

Yes, between mid-January and late March, when humpback whales are in Samaná Bay. Several operators run a combined day, and at least one carries a hydrophone so you can hear the males singing.
